The official St. Johns River Cleanup has been canceled because of coronavirus concerns, but the vision remains.
Volusia County’s Environmental Management Division is asking residents to pick up litter along the river and post photos on social media on Saturday, May 2.
“As much as we and our dedicated volunteers love the river cleanup, we won’t be able to mobilize large groups this year,” said cleanup coordinator Sondra McCulloch. “But we still need to look out for our environment, so we are asking people to go out alone or with one or two friends to pick up trash. We encourage them to wear face masks and gloves.”
Participants can post their photos and number of pounds picked up on Facebook or Twitter with the hashtags #sjrcu2020, #protectourriver and #AmericanRiversCleanUp. They can contact McCulloch at 386-717-4941 or smcculloch@volusia.org so she can track the total poundage and arrange for them to pick up a St. Johns River Cleanup bag at a later date.
The trash can be disposed of at home or in a receptacle in a public park.
