University of Central Florida Cybersecurity Team Finishes 2nd In National Competition

UCF’s Cybersecurity Team Places 2nd in Largest National Competition of its Kind

UCF’s Collegiate Cybersecurity Competition Team finished second at the 15th annual National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition, sponsored by Raytheon, which was held virtually over the weekend.

Ten teams from across the United States competed at the national competition, where a simulated cyberattack was staged against a fictional business network. The teams were scored on their ability to detect and respond to outside threats, keep services such as mail servers and web servers operational, and respond to routine business requests.

More than 250 university teams from across the country squared off through regional competitions earlier in the year to vie for a spot at the national competition. Originally scheduled for April, the competition was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic to allow organizers time to reengineer the competition as a virtual event with the student teams competing remotely from their homes. UCF’s team had been practicing remotely since spring break, when UCF shifted to remote instruction for the remainder of the semester. Team members were stationed in Michigan, South Carolina and across Florida.

UCF’s team this year was made up of 11 students from the College of Engineering and Computer Science. This is the third consecutive year UCF has placed second at the prestigious competition. The University of Virginia took first place.
