Become An Amateur Weather Expert With Free Weather Spotter Training

With sun showers, intense thunderstorms and the threat of hurricanes, Volusia County is a weather-watcher’s dream! The National Weather Service Melbourne’s SKYWARN class is your opportunity to become an amateur weather expert!

Taught by National Weather Service meteorologists, SKYWARN training is geared toward anyone interested in learning more about our Florida weather. Upon completion, you too will be a trained weather spotter who can report severe and hazardous weather to help in the weather warning process. SKYWARN spotter reports provide vital “ground truth” to the National Weather Service.

“This course covers everything from the varying types of clouds to how a storm forms. It’s a great opportunity for anyone who wants a better understanding of weather,” said Volusia County Emergency Management Director Jim Judge.

“In Florida, we experience a wide variety of weather conditions, from light summer rain to intense lightning to hurricanes. SKYWARN participants not only learn more about real-world weather conditions, they then have the ability to monitor and report weather occurrences to aid in the warning process.”

The basic SKYWARN Spotter Training class is offered by Volusia County Emergency Management, in cooperation with the National Weather Service in Melbourne.

Due to COVID-19, upcoming courses will be available virtually. The basic SKYWARN Spotter Training class will be offered from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, and from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22. An advanced SKYWARN Spotter Training class will be offered at a later date.

SKYWARN training is free. Online preregistration is required. To register, visit go.usa.gov/xvH9a.
