County to restore scrub habitat in Spruce Creek Preserve

Posted On: July 29, 2020

Volusia County Land Management staff will begin a three-week project to reduce the height of scrub vegetation on 150 acres in Doris Leeper Spruce Creek Preserve on Thursday, July 30.

They will use a roller chopper to knock down and chop up brush and trees up to about 3 inches in diameter to keep the habitat in a healthy condition and make it more attractive to scrub wildlife, including gopher tortoises and Florida scrub jays, which prefer low brush.

Scrub is an imperiled Florida ecosystem found on high sandy ridges and is dominated by short oaks and other low vegetation, numerous open areas of white sand, and very few tall trees.

Roller chopping is used to allow for natural regeneration and wildlife improvement. The county’s goal is to bring some of the overgrown tall tees down to the ground, allowing for the natural shrubbery and natural scrub areas to regrow the way they are supposed to be.

This mechanical treatment will take place near Martin’s Dairy Road. There will be no trail closures or impact to public use.
