Longtime librarian Jane Weimer has received the Distinguished Career Award from the Northeast Florida Library Information Network for displaying “achievement and leadership throughout her career in the library field.”

Weimer has been a regional librarian for the Volusia County Public Library system for more than 35 years. She’s based at the Port Orange Regional Library and also oversees the public libraries in New Smyrna Beach, Edgewater and Oak Hill.

“Jane’s devotion to the field of librarianship is clearly evident,” Branch Manager Cyndy Moore said. “She is a strong leader, weathering many storms as libraries have evolved over the decades. She is a careful thinker, a strategic planner, and an effective decision maker.”

Weimer has never limited her role as a librarian to pointing the way to the right book among the stacks or showing people where journal articles are kept. Instead, she charted a path that made her libraries critical resources for children and adults. She made it her mission to ensure that the libraries were high-tech hubs where residents can learn 21st century skills, use public access computers and conduct online research.

At the same time, she has championed literacy with old-fashioned storytimes and summer reading programs and drawn people to the libraries with book clubs, plays, concerts and craft sessions. She also knows her “regulars” and their interests, greeting them with a friendly smile and offering her assistance.

“Jane has a warm demeanor and is loved by her community, as evidenced by the many visits she receives from patrons,” Moore said. “She is an active listener and gives her full attention when engaged with others in conversation.”
