Volusia County residents can participate in the Ocean Conservancy’s 35th annual International Coastal Cleanup anywhere along the beach, Halifax River or Indian River Lagoon on Sept. 18, 19 and 20.
This year’s event will look a bit different, because volunteers will be “together apart” as they work toward a cleaner environment and Volusia County will not host large sites or encourage cleanups consisting of 10 or more people. Participants are encouraged to use the Ocean Conservancy’s Clean Swell App in place of a paper data card to track their trash collection. Learn more about the app at www.volusia.org/cleanup.In 2019, 1,631 Volusia County volunteers collected 7,302 pounds of trash at more than 40 locations. This year, staff has added locations that have boat launches where participants can bring their kayaks, paddleboards, canoes or motorboats to access hard-to-reach coastlines.
Volunteers can register online at www.volusia.org/cleanup through Aug. 28.
Participants are asked to bring garden gloves, drinking water in refillable bottles, and buckets for collecting trash. They should wear a hat, sunscreen, comfortable clothing and outdoor footwear. Volunteers are also encouraged to wear proper personal protective equipment, including a mask and gloves, and follow city mandates for social distancing.
Some clean-up supplies will be available for pre-registered participants before the event. The first 1,500 pre-registered volunteers will receive a promotional item with the 2020 International Coastal Cleanup logo. For information about the Coastal Cleanup or organizing your own beach cleanup, visit www.volusiaseaturtles.org under the “Beach environment” tab or contact Sami McCorkle at email@example.com or 386-238-4716.
