Hurricane Teddy Expected To Impact Volusia County Beaches And Ramp Openings This Weekend

While there’s a flurry of storm activity in the tropics, Florida isn’t currently bracing for direct impact. However, despite being far off the coast, Hurricane Teddy, along with a high pressure area off the coast, will impact Volusia County beaches this weekend. Expected conditions include strong surf with dangerous rip currents, higher than normal tides and strong gusts of wind accompanied by rain.

In preparation for the squally weekend weather, the Volusia County coastal division will remove all port-a-lets and trash receptacles along the beach by end of day Friday. Water may be shut off to some coastal showers. Coastal will continuously inspect walkovers and ramps during this coastal event for erosion, and access points may be temporarily closed to address any safety issues.

Beach Ramp Openings May Be Delayed

A mid-morning high tide Saturday and Sunday, coupled with rough surf, may delay the opening of vehicle access ramps until the tide recedes. Individuals who choose to visit the beach this weekend should consider off-beach parking. Beachgoers should swim in front of a staffed lifeguard tower, as strong rip currents are expected. Scattered thunderstorms are also forecasted, which bring the risk of lightning. Beachgoers are reminded to exit the water and seek shelter in the case of thunder.

Reach thousands of people throughout Central Florida.
